Toddler dies after falling into pit in Kogi

A toddler identified as Saida Haruna has died after falling into a pit in Aloko community, Bassa Local Government Area of Kogi State.

The incident happened on Sunday, October 4, 2026. According to a resident, Muhammed Idris, the pit was dug behind the family house by Saida’s brother and his friend while they were playing.

Idris said Saida woke up in the morning and went to Islamic school. She returned home and went to the back of the house where the pit was.

He said she bent down to look inside the pit, lost her balance and fell inside. She died on the spot.

Idris said the death of the little girl has thrown the entire community into mourning, noting that a small hole dug for play ended up killing a person.

He said, “Saida Haruna woke up this morning and went to Islamic School. After returning home, she went behind their house where there was pit dug by her own brother and another boy.

“She bent down to look inside the pit, lost her balance, fell inside and died immediately.

“The death of the innocent child has thrown the entire community into mourning. Everyone is crying for the innocent child.”

He prayed for the repose of her soul and for her family to have the strength to bear the loss.
