The British Museum has announced new measures to ease lengthy queues for the Bayeux Tapestry exhibition after visitors complained of waiting up to two hours.
The museum said the response to the 11th-century embroidery has been extraordinary since it went on display on September 10 for its first return to the UK in almost 1,000 years.
From Monday, the museum will introduce an audio guide with extra detail about the 70-metre tapestry, clearer signage explaining different parts of the exhibition, additional seating for those queuing, and extended opening hours to space out bookings and prevent daytime build-up.
The changes follow a ban on photography introduced two weeks ago after visitors stopping to take pictures caused significant delays. The museum had recorded its biggest ever day of ticket sales in July with over 2.4 million pounds generated in 24 hours.
The announcement comes after hundreds of ticket holders were turned away last week due to backlogs. The museum has apologised and offered refunds and priority rebooking slots. Tickets are currently sold out until the next release later this month.
