Osun State University has made its debut in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027, emerging as Nigeria’s highest ranked state owned university.
The university was placed in the 1,201-1,400 global band in the ranking published on September 30, 2025.
According to a statement by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Ademola Adesoji, on Wednesday, UNIOSUN secured joint 8th position nationally, alongside Babcock University and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
The 2027 edition assessed 2,297 universities across 118 countries and territories, with 29 Nigerian universities making the list. Nigeria emerged as the most represented country in sub-Saharan Africa.
UNIOSUN recorded its strongest performance in Research Environment with a score of 25.6, the second-highest among Nigerian universities, behind Covenant University’s 32.5.
The university also scored 23.6 in Teaching to rank fifth nationally, 43.8 in Research Quality, 17.6 in Industry and 40.3 in International Outlook.
THE ranking is based on five pillars: Teaching, Research Environment, Research Quality, International Outlook and Industry, with 18 performance indicators covering teaching reputation, research productivity, citations, international collaboration and industry income.
The report listed UNIOSUN as a new entrant and described its debut as noteworthy, noting it ranked ahead of 19 older and larger Nigerian universities.
